Tramp Art Box with Floral and Circle Motifs, United States, Early 20th Century

A rich and elaborately decorated tramp art box, its exterior entirely covered in the distinctive chip-carved and layered wooden motifs of the tradition, here arranged in a bold pattern of ovals, circles, and a central floral cross design on a warm amber and dark brown ground. The surface has a lacquered finish that deepens the contrast between the carved layers, giving the piece a jewel-like quality. The hinged lid opens to a plain interior, and a small brass button clasp secures the front. A fine example of American folk art with considerable presence and craft.
