Milky Glazed Stoneware Lidded Tureen, France, 1970s

A generously proportioned and beautifully rustic French earthenware lidded tureen, its wide low body finished in a warm speckled grey-white glaze that breaks to reveal the warm terracotta clay at the rim and base. Two small tab handles flank the body, and the domed lid is fitted with a simple knob finial. The glaze has a wonderfully painterly, uneven quality that speaks to its hand-crafted origins. A substantial and characterful piece that is equally at home on the table or displayed on a kitchen shelf.
