Charles Dudouyt Rope and Wood Bench, France, 1940s

$4,800

A deeply characterful piece from one of the great names in French rustic modernism. Charles Dudouyt worked in the 1930s and 1940s producing furniture that drew from folk tradition and medieval craft, and this two-seat bench is a strong example of his signature vocabulary. The frame is built from solid turned wood, dark and richly patinated, with the bobbin-turned posts, ringed stretchers, and sturdy X-base that define his most recognizable work. The seat and back are woven in natural rope, slung low and generously sized, giving the piece a relaxed, almost sling-like quality that feels surprisingly modern. Substantial and sculptural, it works equally well as a functional bench or as a statement object in an entryway or living room.
