Hammered Copper & Brass Bowl, Austrian Secession Movement, 1900–1920

A commanding and deeply characterful brutalist hammered bronze bowl of considerable weight and presence. The wide, low form is hammered with an all-over texture that catches light beautifully across its dark, richly patinated surface, shifting between deep bronze, black, and warm gold tones. The piece is raised on an architecturally plain frame of angular iron legs riveted to the bowl, a structural detail that is uncompromisingly brutalist in spirit. An exceptional and rare object of museum quality.
